Shi Jing, usually translated as The Book of Songs, is the first anthology of Chinese poetry. It collected 填空1] poems in over 500 years from the early Western Zhou Dynasty to the middle of the Spring and Autumn Period. It falls into three sections, namely, 填空2], 填空3] and 填空4]. The 填空5] includes 160 popular ballads and folk songs from subordinate states of the Zhou Dynasty. It is the most valuable part, which provides a vivid picture of the life of the lower classes. The 填空6] with 105 pieces are used exclusively in official ceremonies and at high-level banquets and gatherings. The 填空7] consists of 40 pieces used exclusively for sacrificial offerings in the royal ancestral temples.
